What is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), or ABA Therapy, is applying the science of learning and behavior to socially significant goals to foster meaningful behavior change. ABA, when provided intensively and conscientiously, can cultivate growth and success for our clients. Behavior analytic concepts are around us throughout our daily lives, but when applied at the individual level to address a specific goal, it can be a powerful therapeutic tool.

ABA is:

Measurable

Socially Significant

Research Driven

Data Driven

Meaningful Change

Individuals who implement ABA therapy identify behaviors that are measurable and observable. These behaviors should always be socially significant and therefore important to the individual and sensitive to the culture and community. The techniques and teaching strategies used in ABA therapy are derived from over 50 years of empirical research resulting in a variety of behavioral concepts, techniques, and technologies. The decision making that guides the direction of the individual’s therapy is always data driven and objective. This leads to effective interventions and teaching strategies that result in meaningful change for the individual across multiple settings and situations.

During ABA therapy, professionals can help identify how behavior works, how learning takes place, how the individual’s behavior interacts with the environment, and how to promote effective behavior change to help the individual achieve their goals. Increasing new skills and decreasing undesirable behaviors will lead to success with a particular skill, a certain situation, or in a specific setting. ABA effectively teaches a multitude of skills, including communication, social and play, academic and cognitive, adaptive and independent living, and functional coping to replace harmful or maladapative behaviors hindering the individual’s success. ABA is not about changing an individual to make them “normal” or to make people behave in one specific, pre-determined way. It is about identifying environmental or behavioral barriers in an individual’s life and working together to pinpoint realistic and achievable goals that will build upon themselves to reach an ultimate outcome.

One of the most well-known applications and successes of ABA therapy is with Autism Spectrum Disorders. ABA has helped thousands of individuals in the autistic community learn to communicate, build meaningful social connections with their family and peers, and gain independence at home, at school, and vocationally.
